The Fragility of Life
Proverbs 16:1 (gnt) "We may make our plans, but God has the last word."
In the light of recent events, I’m thinking about ones future. When the unexpected happens we realize how fragile life really is. As we go through life day by day we feel as though we have years ahead to plan or do whatever it is we want to do. We believe that nothing will ever get in the way of our plans and we feel as though we are in control our life. It seems as though we can always do what we want. Whatever we don’t do today we can do tomorrow.
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
But what if tomorrow never comes? What is it you are leaving undone or putting off for a better time? How many times in your life have you said “I know this needs to get done, but I don’t want to do it right now. I’ll do it later”.
You know you have said or thought that, time and time again. We have a tendency to put off those things we really don’t want to address today, until a future date. Often that date is way out there and sometimes we never get around to those “important things”. It’s human nature to delay but we really need to take inventory of our life and decide what it is we need to do today. For some, tomorrow never comes.
James 4:14 "You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes."
Regardless what we think, the future is not in our control. In recent weeks I know of a young lady in her early 20s while driving to work in a rain storm ran off the road and drown in the river. In another event some lives were taken in random shootings as people were shopping at the mall. These were completely unexpected and for the ones involved it happened within seconds. They could not have anticipated that their life would end that day nor did they have any time to prepare for such tragedies.
Anything, a heart attack, an aneurysm, a stroke or even the return of Christ could happen in the next few minutes. Any of these events or one of a hundred others could change our life forever . They might even end our time on this earth.
Actually we will all face death. The question we can’t answer is when. If your time comes before you expect it, will you be ready? Do you have your affairs in order so those you love will not go through unnecessary hardships? Are you personally ready to meet God? Are you confident that you will spend eternity in heaven?
Don't do Tomorrow what You can do Today
These are questions we tend to avoid and don’t want to consider, but the truth is, we may not be able to carry out our plans for tomorrow and do those things we’ve put off until later. Maybe you have never considered it, but It is important to decide what you need to do to prepare yourself for eternity, and do those things that need to be done for your loved ones so life for them will be more bearable if something were to happen to you today.
1 Corinthians 15:51-53 "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality."
The most important thing we need to do is settle the question of where we will spend eternity. It is not a difficult one to answer. Anyone would choose heaven over hell but now is the time to, let’s say, “get your ticket”. To secure your place in heaven is a simple matter. It only requires that you believe in Jesus. It does take faith to believe and to receive the “perks” or blessings. Before you travel on you will want to take advantage of the close relationship Christ offers you along with your ticket, free of charge.
It is hard for most people these days to accept anything that is free. We always think there is a catch. That somehow there is going be some hidden fee or condition on a free gift, but that is not the case here.
God grants us a first class trip to heaven if we will simply reach out and accept it from him. We are not required to do anything other than believe that he has paid the price by sending his son to die on a cross for us. It was the plan all along because he loves us and wants us to spend eternity in heaven with him.
John 14:2-3 "In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also."
Why question what God has done for us? It is no different than you would do for someone you love. Wouldn’t you do whatever was necessary to make it possible for those you love to come and be with you? Wouldn’t you give them a free ticket so they can be near you?
Have you? Do those you love know the way to heaven? If not it is time now to show them the way. Be sure those you love and care about know they need to get their “ticket to heaven” before it is too late. God loves those you care about too and offers them the same deal, for free. Make sure they do not put it off too long.
John 17:3 "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
Not only the heart of those you love is important, but also the condition you leave them in. Unfinished business is difficult for them to deal with. Put your house in order . Don’t put off those things you can do today until tomorrow. Be prepared for the unexpected and feel confident that God will help you to know what needs to be done. Put yourself in the place of the ones you would leave behind and you will know what you need to do.
Be sure the ones you care about know you love them. Also forgive any grievance you have and break down the walls you have put in place between you and someone you care about. Nothing hurts more than to not have that chance to forgive or be forgiven.
What can I do for God Today?
All these things we should consider doing sooner than later. It is what God wants you to do today. Accept the truth and acknowledge that you are not in control of your life. What you do today will make a difference. What you postpone for tomorrow may never get done.
