Be a Language Partner
A great idea I'm sure you will enjoy doing especially if you are looking for new friend or have some extra time on your hands is to volunteer at your local college to meet with International students as a language partner.
This is something I do on a regular basis and I have really enjoyed the friends I have made through this activity. In past years in my career as a design engineer working for a large computer company I would travel often on business. I always saw it as an opportunity to see something new and enjoy a new culture and I met a lot of new friends from around the world. Even though I am not much of a people person making friends was easier for me in that foreign environment and I would often go with them on short trips to see and learn the culture of the that area.
Imagine what it is like for a foreign student who comes to America for the first time to go to college here. These kids all of a sudden find themselves in a new place, away from friends and family in an environment that is completely different from what they grew up with. Many times they will feel completely lost with no one to turn to and a limited ability to communicate or understand others.
A Great Opportunity for You to Do something for God
This is a great opportunity for you to do something for God. Many colleges have programs that cater to International students. International students from all over the world will come to improve their English skills and get an education in the USA. Some schools that cater to International students have a program to match students up with language partners in order to help them learn English in a real setting with local volunteers.
I have been privileged to meet and talk with many International students over the last few years. It is blessing for both them and for myself. Many I have maintained contact with even after they have returned to their own country.
Don't be afraid to talk with an International Student.
You might wonder if this is something you could do but if you will try it you'll find that it is very easy. These students are thrilled to have an American to sit and talk with. Because of the curiosity for both the student and yourself there are endless topics to discuss. I find it much easier than talking with other Americans because you both want to learn more about the other, the culture, what each likes to do and so many other things. There is no set time or place you have to meet. Arrangements can be made together that will work for you both as often or as long as you like.
I generally I will meet with my student for about one hour a week. Start out slow by introducing yourself and get to know each other. Then on the next few visits try going to a coffee shop, a snack bar or for a walk in the park. As time progresses and you become more comfortable with each other you may want to include them in activities you enjoy or invite them to a family get together. It is completely up to you and how well your friendship is progressing.
How do I Volunteer and meet an International Student?
To help you get started there is an organization called International Students Inc. or ISI. I have have a close friend that has been on staff with ISI for several years as the City director of the local ISI in my city. Through him I learned of their commitment to help International students. ISI helped me to find a place where I could connect with students who wanted a language partner.
I am a supporter and I donate to ISI regularly because I believe in what they are doing to help students and also to introduce them to a Christian setting.
You may also call your local college directly and ask them is they have International Students and a program where you can meet with them as a language partner.
Take part in The Great Commission as a Friend to an International Student
Matthew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations"
Think of it this way. Gods command to us as Christians to go and make disciples of others around the world. What better way is there to be that missionary than to share his word with an International student in your own back yard? That student may then carry the message he learned through your example back home with them. Those hours you spend with your student could be some of the most important words you speak in the name of Jesus spreading God's love across the globe. This is your chance to be an international missionary through a student who wants to talk with you.
Go to ISI and let them help you find a group or an individual you can meet with. All you have to do is make a friend and God will bless you and them through your action.
