Finding time to Do what God wants You to Do

Where do you spend the majority of your time?

Not Enough Time – is probably the most used excuse we give when it comes to not doing something we need to do.  Sometimes it's true that we may not have time when something urgent comes up. I often use that as an excuse I give myself when I don't complete everything I feel I should have done. It seems to be the natural "go to" excuse we all use.

time for GodTime for most of us is matter of priority.  It seems like we can always find time to do those things we really want to do. Somehow we find a way to work them in.

I like to go fishing. It is one of the things I enjoy and if I haven't gone in a while I'll change my schedule and skip something that takes up my time.  By doing that I'm free to go fishing for a couple hours or maybe even the whole day.  There is always something that can wait or is not really important at all which will allow us to do what we really want to do.

When you feel something is really important to you, you'll find time to do it.

For most people our schedules are packed full of things that steal our time. Work, kids, school, exercise, TV, friends – there are a hundred things that take our time. There is certainly nothing wrong with keeping busy.  The real question boils down to what is most important in our life? What are your priorities? Where should you really be spending your time?

Consider what is Most Important in your Life

Take a minute and think,  Hmmm ??

  • Think about prioritiesWhat is it that I feel in my heart is most important to me?
  • What will will make the biggest difference in my life, the lives of my family and others around me?

Whatever you decided, ask yourself "Do I prioritize my life such that I do what I feel is most important"?   For many of us it isn't, so why do we spend more doing other things that are less important?

Now I don't know what you decided is most important to you.  I think for most of us it might be our kids, our family, friends or our work.  Usually if we are honest with ourselves we wouldn't place material things at the top of our list.

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Of course we all enjoy having nice things and feel they will make us happy but they shouldn't be the focus of our lives.  Things like cars, boats, houses and all sorts of toys we may try to accumulate are only temporary. They come and go, they rust, they break and soon we move onto something else.  However our families, relationships and people are really much more important and long lasting than anything you can buy.

When God has priority in my Life

For those of us who are Christians and believe in God we know from his word that He commands us to put Him first in our life.

Matthew 6:31-33 "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Giving God priority is not easy with all the pressures we face everyday. It is much easier to do whatever seems most pressing at the time.  But God says he will give all those other things to us IF we put him first.  Do we really believe his word? Will he do what he says he will do?

In my experience I know he will do what is written in his word. However we need to also do our part to give him the priority he deserves in our lives.  Just as you can find time to do whatever you really feel you want to do You can also find time for God.

Take time everyday to pray and ask God to help you to be who he wants you to be, Just for today.  Read his word to learn more about him and how you can be more like Jesus. Learn through his word what it is he wants you to do for him.

In those few minutes God will lift your spirit and give you the energy to do all those other things you need to get done.  He will not steal time from you but he will bless and enrich your time so that you can do more than you ever could do without his help.

What can I do for God Today?

Prioritize your time so that God comes first over everything else in your life.  By doing this everything else will fall into place where it belongs.
